Inspirational posters, music, parade and prayer marked the conclusion of AIDS awareness week on St. Thomas early Saturday evening.
Musicians from Charlotte Amalie, Ivan Eudora Kean and Andelita Cancryn schools marched behind banners marking the observation of World AIDS Awareness Day. The group of about 100 made its way from Schneider Regional Medical Center to Charlotte Amalie High School.
In her second year as organizer, HIV prevention specialist and parade coordinator Kahina Browne said she was pleased with the parade as well as the young people’s dedication and involvement throughout the week.
“Awareness of HIV and AIDS is vital. Young people cannot be reminded enough to make themselves aware of the effects and preventable options available to them” Browne said.
While four-year-old parade marcher A’tijah Colaire might not have been able to comprehend the message written on the hand printed poster she carried, "Once you choose hope, anything’s possible," all eyes were drawn to the young volunteer and her placard almost half her size.
The afternoon’s festivities culminated in a candlelight vigil on the open green space of the CAHS track, and a moment of silence in remembrance of those who have been affected by AIDS throughout the St. Thomas and Virgin Islands community
