NEW SWEDISH LAW PROVIDES FOR DUAL CITIZENSHIP

0
June 5, 2003 – For Virgin Islands residents who hold Swedish citizenship, or who previously did so, there is news from Maria Tankenson Hodge, Sweden's honorary consul for the territory.
Under a law recently passed in Sweden, Hodge said in a release, "a Swedish citizen who becomes a citizen of another country may now retain his or her Swedish citizenship."
Further, a person who forfeited Swedish citizenship by becoming a citizen of another nation before July 1, 2001, "may regain Swedish citizenship during the grace period which expires June 30." To do this, the individual must contact the Swedish Migration Board by June 30.
According to Hodge, after the grace period ends on June 30, "a two-year residence in Sweden will be required before you may apply to regain your Swedish citizenship."
The forms that need to be submitted to the board can be accessed online at the Migrationsverket Web site. The page comes up in Swedish, but an English version also can be accessed. Click on the left-hand menu "Citizenship" option.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETS IN EMERGENCY SESSION

0
June 4, 2003 – The Board of Education held an emergency meeting on Wednesday afternoon and acted on two items, according to a release.
It approved funding to cover the cost of some summer courses required for certification and recertification of Education Department professional staff. Teacher certification is an issue the board must address to comply with mandates of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
And it voted to hire the law firm of Frazer and Williams to represent the board in a lawsuit filed by Dr. Jorge Galiber, school board member and, until March 13, the body's acknowledged chair.
Five board members voted to remove Galiber as president at the March meeting, an action which, in the view of the five, elevated then-vice chair Harry Daniel — one of the five — to the position of acting chair.
The board has been enmeshed in internal dissent since that time. The board's staff attorney said the vote to oust Galiber was invalid because a two-thirds majority, or six votes, is needed for "reorganization." Three other board members who had been present at the start of the March meeting but left before the vote was taken say their departure left the board without a quorum and that the action also is invalid on those grounds. The five disagree on both counts.
Galiber contends the action was taken against him because of his having publicly stated concerns about board-related matters, and he has sued the board seeking to have his ouster overturned.
The regular June board meeting was scheduled for Tuesday. Only two members, Daniel and Keith Richards, showed up. On the agenda for that meeting were the two items addressed Wednesday afternoon.
Information was not immediately available on who attended Wednesday's meeting.
The board members are: Daniel, Galiber, Terrence D. Joseph, Claudette Petersen, Richards, Malik Sekou, Linda Thomas and Yvonne Williams-Henry. The ninth seat on the board has been vacant since the death in April of Gerald E. Hodge Sr.

Citing information from the federal Food and Drug Administration, the release said that Albers Medical Distributors has voluntarily recalled three lots of 90-count bottles, saying they contain counterfeit Lipitor and represent a potentially significant risk to consumers.
Labels on the bottles say "Repackaged by: MED-PRO, Inc. Lexington, Neb." in the lower left corner. The lots involved in the recall are:
– 20722V, expiration 09-2004.
– 04132V, expiration 01-2004.

"The FDA is urging health-care providers and patients alike to check the packaging very carefully" before using any Lipitor product," the release stated, and patients who have bottles with any of the label and lot indications cited should not use the medication but return the product to the place of purchase. According to the release, an FDA investigation into the matter is in progress.
