Aug. 22, 2002 – The V.I. Institute of Performing Arts will be conducting fall registration at the school, on the following days:
— Aug. 19-23, 1-5 p.m.
— Aug. 24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
— Aug. 26-30, 3-6 p.m.
— Aug. 31, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Institute's goal is to provide St. Thomas youth with professional training and a curriculum that exposes children to the beauty and discipline of the performing arts, according to a release.
Classes are offered in cultural dance, flamenco dance, hip hop, jazz, ballet, tap, piano, gymnastics, and tai chi. The fall semester begins on Monday, September 3, 2002. Classes are offered after school from 3:30 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The Institute is located in downtown St. Thomas, near Local Bodies in the walkway next to the Spenceley Building which formerly housed Vitelco.

Aug. 22, 2002 – Attorney General Iver Stridiron says he will take disciplinary action against one of his prosecutors for dropping charges this week against two men accused of illegal weapons possession without getting clearance from his superiors to do so.
Stridiron said he was off island on Tuesday when he got a telephone call from the chief of the V.I. Justice Department's Criminal Division tell him "that, without authority, one of my assistant attorneys general went into court and nol prossed a gun case."
Nol pros,, short for the Latin nolle prosequi, is a formal notice to the court of intention not to proceed in prosecuting a case, thereby allowing any defendants in the case to be released, Stridiron said.
The case arose from the arrest of two men last weekend near the Kirwan Terrace housing community. The two were apprehended in a vehicle that authorities suspected had been involved in random shootings in the area. When police stopped the car at a traffic checkpoint, they spotted the barrel of a military assault rifle sticking out of a plastic garbage bag in the vehicle, Stridiron said. A third man in the car fled. Deputy Police Chief Theodore Carty said on Wednesday that a search was under way for that individual.
When the case was called in Territorial Court on Tuesday, Stridion said, the prosecutor, whom he declined to name, told the judge that the Justice Department could not make its case.
"He had no authority to do so," Stridiron said. "We have a very strict policy with regard to matters pertaining to guns, and it is that I don't like guns — as the attorney general — and I have no sympathy for anyone who uses a gun to commit any crime in the Virgin Islands."
In cases involving firearms, "We will prosecute without exception," he said.
Stridiron said he has ordered the chief of the Criminal Division to re-file the case against the two men.
He said Justice Department policy spells out steps to be taken if a prosecutor feels a case is too weak to go forward or is otherwise flawed. "As I have indicated to all my lawyers, the governor of the territory expects me as the attorney general to be unyielding to those persons who are charged with committing crimes," he said. "I expect my lawyers to be as unyielding in their prosecution of those cases as I would be."

Basic Mechanics & Small Engine Repairs
Cosmetology
Carpentry
Registration for the courses will be held between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Monday, Aug. 26, through Friday, Sept. 13. Classes will be conducted from Sept. 3 to Jan. 24, 2003.
The Raphael O. Wheatley Center is located directly behind the Lockhart Elementary School and west of the Roy lester Schneider Hospital.

Aug. 22, 2002 – Freida Farrow, principal of the Joseph Gomez Elementary School has announced the schedule for the opening of school.
Students in grades one to six are to report at 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27 for a full day of instuction. Lunch will be served and bus transportation provided.
All Kindergarten students are to be accompanied by a parent or guardian for orientation. Parents are reminded that immunization records, Social Security numbers and contact numbers both at home and work are required to complete the orientation and registration process.
Kindergarten students with last names beginning with the letters A-L are to report to the school library from 8 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
Kindergarten students with last names beginning with the letters M-Z are to report to the school library from 8 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
All Kindergarten students will report for a full day of instruction beginning Thursday, Aug. 29.

Aug. 22, 2002 – Members of the Rotary East, St. Thomas will visit six elementary schools at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, opening day, to present first graders with school packets containing supplies necessary for first graders. Schools to be visited that day are Jane E. Tuitt, Evelyn Marcelli, Dober Elementary, Peace Corp and Ulla Muller.
At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug.27, they will visit Edith Williams School.

The St. Croix Hiking Association will hold its monthly meeting in room 133 of the UVI Extension Services. Plans for the Sept. 15 hike in the Butler Bay, Nicholas and Annaly area will be discussed.
