CARDOW OWNER HAS GIVEN UVI AWARDS SINCE 1981
June 20, 2001 – Once again this year, Cardow Jewelers owner William C. Dowling has quietly awarded a four-year scholarship to the University of the Virgin Islands to a deserving public high school graduate on St. Thomas.
This year's recipient is Zurah Joseph, a member of the Class of 2001 at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School. He plans to concentrate his studies in chemical engineering and biochemistry and to pursue a career in a marine environmental field.
The scholarship, covering tuition and textbooks, is designed to support public education in the Virgin Islands. Each year since 1981, it has been awarded alternately to a graduating senior at either Charlotte Amalie High School or Ivanna Eudora Kean High School.
Applicants must commit to work toward a college degree with the intention of using their education locally to benefit the Virgin Islands. They are asked to submit an essay detailing their educational goals and career aspirations toward that end. According to Michael Lotterman, Cardow human resources diretor, who monitors the scholarship program, recipents are expected to maintain a 2.0 grade point average and to "drop by to share their progress."
Joseph, the son of Sedley Joseph and Christabel Registe, was selected from qualified applicants by Eudora Kean senior class counselor Annette Bertrand. In his essay, Joseph wrote, "Everyone wants to leave and go to the United States, but after staying on [the UVI] campus for a summer program, I fell in love with everything about the university. Furthermore, I plan to return to contribute any knowledge I have acquired to improve the conditions of our oceans."

STUDENTS TO HELP DEVELOP PARK BUSINESS PLAN
June 20, 2001 – Through the National Parks Business Plan Initiative, graduate students from the Harvard University School of Business and the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs will be working with V.I. National Park staff for the next 10 weeks to analyze park operations and finances.
According to park Supt. John H. King, "The end result will be a business plan that will determine what level of funding support is necessary to meet the park's mission." He expressed hope that the plan "will encourage additional operational financing by Congress and other funding sources."
Anjali Gupta and Rob Lawrence, the business plan initiative consultants working with the V.I. National Park, said the initiative will provide park managers with "a financial and operational understanding of where the park has been, where it is, and where it needs to go." This information, they said, will then be used in developing financial strategies to enable the park to meet current and future needs.
The business plan initiative, created in 1998, is a partnership of the National Park Service, the National Parks Conservation Association, and a consortium of philanthropic organizations led by the Kendall Foundation. Its purpose is to strengthen the financial management capabilities of park units, thus enabling the NPS to understand and communicate the financial conditions and needs of park system units more effectively.
Through the initiative, 28 students are working at 13 national parks this summer. Previous initiative projects have been carried out in 33 parks. For more information, please contact Gupta or Lawrence at 693-9891.
