One of the best-kept secrets and greatest bargains on the island is the Magens Bay monthly pass. For only $15 a month — $6 for people over 55 — residents can come and go with family members as many times as they want every month.
"Some people come back and forth three times a day," said Bill Jowers, general manager of the Magens Bay Authority.
Magens Bay, which was deeded to the people of the Virgin Islands in perpetuity by Arthur Fairchild, was named by "National Geographic" as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world.
Several "societies" of regular runners, walkers, swimmers and bathers can be found on the road within the park and in the tranquil waters of the bay in the early morning and late afternoon almost any day of the week. They represent the local contingent of park users.
"A lot of those folks don't buy passes," Jowers said, "because they are usually there before and after regular hours."
But for others the pass is a bargain, considering admission to Magens is $1 per person and $1 per car every time they enter the park.
Jowers said the number of passes sold fluctuates, but averages 30 to 40 a month. But many residents don't know about it, and there is no sign at the gatehouse to tell them.
Residents can buy their passes at the gatehouse, with cash or by check, by presenting valid local identification.
"They are for people who live here, pay taxes here, are part of the community," Jowers said.
Passes are available to part-time residents too, as long has they have local identification.
