ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITY MAP FOR STX AVAILABLE TO REVIEW

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources, Division of Environmental Protection has obtained the newly developed Environmental Sensitivity Index Map for St. Croix.
The map will be used to provide knowledge on sensitive habitats and resource information during an oil or hazardous material spill and aid in remedieation efforts, said DPNR Commissioner Dean Plaskett. Although the information within the map is specifically tailored for spill response, it has the potential to be used for other purposes.
The map is published as a color-coded 11-inch by 17-inch atlas, which covers the islands inland and coastal areas. Upon finalization of the map, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will publish digital map data on CD-ROM in two formats: one suitable for local printing and distribution and one for use with Geographic Information Systems.
The map is available for review and comment at the Division of Environmental Protection office at Water Gut Homes, call(340) 773-0565 for an appointment. Interested persons may submit written comments, new information and updates no later than Aug. 20 to DEP, 1118 Water Gut Homes, C’sted St. Croix V.I. 00820-5065, attention Lorina Williams, environmental specialist.
