A Virgin Islander's love of writing has garnered him a prestigious national award.
Attorney Tregenza Roach has placed first in the Detroit Black Writers Guild's Margaret A. Walker Short Story Competition.
Roach is the legal counsel for the V.I. Department of Education.
Ruby Simmonds, Education commissioner, publicly congratulated Roach, saying, "Although attorney Roach's primary function in the Department of Education is as legal counsel to the commissioner, he has used his writing talents in service to the students of our schools. He is often called upon to share his love of writing, and to encourage our youngsters to read and write more."
Simmonds also noted that Roach serves with her on the Humanities Council, where he is chairman of the board of directors.
The Humanities Council offers programs that promote a love of learning, encourage dialogue and enhance understanding. Simmonds said Roach represents all those who share in the commitment to uphold those ideals.
