PLAY IN ALL THREE VOLLEYBALL DIVISIONS SUNDAY

On Sunday afternoon, at the Ivanna Eudora Kean Gym, the St. Thomas Amateur Volleyball Club, 2K Vitelco Summer Co-ed Volleyball League played six matches. The league has three divisions. Each division played a game Sunday, one in the primary division, three in the intermediate division and two in the advanced division.
In the first match of the afternoon, in the intermediate division, Medic II defeated the Untouchables in straight games 27-25 and 25-10. Medic II's, Devin Alleyne scored six of his ten points in the first game to lead his team just pass the Untouchables. Medic II seemed to take the fight out of the Untouchables by winning the first game. Alleyne's teammate, Michael Benjamin scored eight of his game high 11 points in the second game of the match. With the victory Medic II improved to 6-4 and dropped the Untouchables the same record and thus they are tied for fourth place in the division.
The second match featured another intermediate battle. The division leading V. I. Port Authority, Vipers lost the first game but came back to take the next two 25-23, 25-10, and 15-12 from the Tuff Mix. In game one, with Tuff Mix down 19-23, Leroy Thomas III served six straight points to seal the victory for his team. However, the Vipers were not to be denied. They rebounded behind the serves of Coral Quinones and Cecil Thomas who had five and six points respectively on consecutive serves. In the third and rubber game of the match the Vipers squeezed by Tuff Mix with balanced scoring. The Vipers remained on top of the division improving to 8-2 and Tuff Mix dropped to 3-7.
Advanced division leading Full Force showed their firepower in annihilating Magnum II 25-10 and 25-15 in the third match of the day. Magnum II did mound a slight comeback in the second game. With Full Force at game point 24-7, Magnum II got a point on side out and scored seven straight points off of the serve of Elaine Lewis. But this was a little too late. Jennifer Matthias led Full Force with 13 points in the contest. With the win Full Force clinched the division title.
The fourth match was in primary division. The Avengers swept Lil Mix 25-17 and 25-17. The victory clinched the primary division for the Avengers. April Jackson of the Avengers led all scorers with 13 points, six in game one and seven in the second game.
The fifth match was virtually no contest as the Avenger Too won by forfeit over the Minutemen 25-0 and 25-0 in the intermediate division.
The sixth and final match of the afternoon was exciting one. The advanced division contest between the Ebony Hawks and One Time went into three sets. Ebony Hawks won the first game by the score of 25-16. However, One Time bounced back with a 25-21 victory in game two. The Ebony Hawks comeback and held on for the victory 15-12. The deciding game got off to an auspicious start. Ebony Hawks coach, Bevis Dowell narrowly avoided a yellow card warning that would have given One Time the serve and one point to begin the game. However, Dowell's questioning of the referee's call than was in his favor got him a well deserved yellow card and the two teams switched sides with the score 8-6 for One Time. The penalty fired up the Ebony Hawks as they got a point on side out and scored five straight points off of the serve of Michael Benjamin. This prompted One Time to call a time out. However, the damage was already done and the Ebony hawks never relinquished the lead.
The league is in its final week of play. The playoffs are scheduled for next week Sunday, August 6 and the all-star game Tuesday, August 8.
