WAPA BOARD APPROVES $9.5M IN CONTRACTS

The governing board of the V.I. Water and Power Authority approved $9.7 million in contracts Thursday.
The first of the seven contracts was for a "retubing" project to increase the reliability of Unit 11 on St. Thomas. The tubes will be purchased from Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. for more than $1.3 million.
The second project approved by the board was the removal and shipping of St. Croix’s Unit 19 turbine rotor to halt a vibration problem in the unit. The original contract was amended by $373,463 for a total cost of more than $1.3 million.
The board also approved a $399,075 increase in cost for the repair of the St. Thomas Fuel Dock that was damaged in Hurricane Marilyn. An emergency and supplemental maintenance service contract for the St. Thomas-St. John and St. Croix districts was awarded to Best Construction for $810,000.
The board also gave contracts to:
– Tampa Tanks for the construction of Tanks 14 and 15 at a cost of $4,954,583.
– E.D. Plumbing for the Hospital Ground Water Distribution System Rehab Project at a cost of $522,638.
– Theodore Tunick and Co. for general liability insurance at a cost of $341,132 and fiduciary and employee benefits insurance for $1,470.
– Topa for employment practices liability coverage for $25,653.
