HURRICANE SHELTERS TO BE INSPECTED

April 16, 2001 – Tuesday the American Red Cross St. Thomas/St. John, in conjunction with VITEMA, will inspect hurricane shelters on St. John in preparation for hurricane season 2001.
Red Cross Executive Director Yvonne Zinicola said Monday the coordinating meeting for the St. John inspections has already been held.
The purpose of the inspections, according to a release from the Red Cross, is to determine which facilities may have known safety or health hazzards that need to be corrected prior to the upcoming hurricane season.
The shelters that were inspected and approved for 2000 were:
– Clarice Thomas Annex, Cruz Bay
– Emmanus Moravian Church, Coral Bay
– Bethany Moravian Church, Cruz Bay
– St. John Methodist Church, Contant
Zinicola said she thought the shelters for 2001 would remain the same. Shelter coordinator Franke Hoheb could not be reached to verify the shelter list.
The release said a number of government and private agencies would participate.
Any facilities that have not been contacted or that wish to participate are asked to contact Hoheb at 774-0375.
