Nov. 7, 2001 – Prospective librarians have an opportunity to earn a degree without leaving the Virgin Islands. A joint meeting on both campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday to learn about the University of Pittsburgh's FastTrack MLIS distance learning program.
If you live here and have a desire to earn an MLIS (Master's in Library and Information Sciences) to work in this dynamic field, you are invited to room EC-302a on St. Croix and room T-213 on St. Thomas.
This meeting is to identify interested persons and inform the University of Pittsburgh of the level of interest, said the UVI release from St. Croix Campus Librarian Judith V. Rogers.
If the interest level, including our area and the wider Caribbean, is sufficient, Pittsburgh will consider placing a faculty member on site to guide students through the full program. A "cohort" group of 10-15 students would start together in May 2002, working on their chosen career path, and graduate together, all without leaving the Virgin Islands.
Pittsburgh offers a public/academic career track, and a school library certification program.
A degree can take graduates beyond traditional libraries, although the Virgin Islands needs a wide variety of librarians: public, university, school, medical, law and court, and historical. A growing number of "librarian engineers" design websites, advise software creators, and manage large telecommunication and database systems.
