Nov. 4, 2001 – "A Sailor with a Camera" is the title of a new art exhibition opening Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Blue Turtle Gallery in downtown Charlotte Amalie.
The show is of photographs by Gary Felton, a 14-year resident of St. Thomas who has captured images around the world from the expanses of the skies to the depths of the oceans — and many places in between.
Felton, a former charter boat captain and scuba instructor, has turned to photography fulltime, utilizing digital technology and state-of-the-art giclée printing. He'll be at the opening reception Nov. 15, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., to discuss his work.
After graduating from Brooks Institute of Photography in Southern California, where he participated. in numerous national student exhibitons, Felton spent 13 successful years as an advertising and architectural photographer on the West Coast. Then the sea beckoned.
Felton's underwater, sailing, travel and architectural photography has appeared in such magazines as Cruising World, Yachting, Sailing, Aloha, U.S. News & World Report and Sport Diver. His work also has been published in Cruising World calendars and the book "Wooden Boats, From Skulls to Yachts."
Sailing throughout the world, he always had his camera with him. The collection of custom giclée prints of his own printing that will be exhibited at the Blue Turtle Gallery is testimony to his travels and his artist's eye, capturing "a world many of us seldom get to see," a release states.
A giclée print is a digitized art image produced on a high-resolution inkjet printer. This merger of art and science has created a new kind of fine art print that is recognized by galleries, museums and collectors for its fidelity of color, detail and a lifespan well beyond that of traditional film prints — up to 200 years in some cases. "A Sailor with a Camera" will feature Felton's own prints on quality watercolor paper and canvas, in sizes up to 30 x 40 inches.
