GERS SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

March 18, 2002 – Applicants for Government Employees Retirement System scholarships have until April 12 to get in their paperwork.
Only students with a parent, stepparent or legal guardian who are government workers or retirees, and therefore GERS members, may apply.
They must be accepted into a four-year bachelor's program at an accredited institution and have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average from one of the territory's secondary schools. And they must demonstrate financial need.
Up to three scholarships are available. They are equal to the amount of a year's full tuition at the University of the Virgin Islands. UVI tuition currently runs $4,095 a year.
"They're not required to go to UVI," said Dee Baecher-Brown, who is the director of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.
Two finalists each from St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John will be chosen.
Applications are available at GERS offices in St. Thomas and St. Croix and at the Community Foundation office. The GERS office in St. Thomas is located on Kronprindsen's Gade. In St. Croix, it is in Orange Grove. Reach the Community Foundation at 774-6031.
The must be mailed to GERS Scholarship Committee, Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, Box 11790, St. Thomas, VI 00801.
