March 25, 2002 – Wednesday's Harbour Night will feature the sounds of the Crucian band Lava, along with entertainment by The Noels, Oreo and Willard John's Guardians of Culture Moko Jumbies.
Lava's leader Wilmoth "Jarbo" Jarvis, says his band has that name "because we're hot!"
Another reason the name fits is that the band covers a lot of musical ground in a night's performance — reggae, calypso, jazz, R&B, meringue and more. Lava has a regular gig at the Divi Carina Bay Casino and is often booked for private functions, from birthdays to funerals.
Formed two years ago, the group consists of Jarvis on bass and lead vocals; Eric McBean on drums, keyboard, saxophone and vocals (plus music director duties); Michael Emanuel on guitar; King "Feel Free" on vocals and percussion; and DJ Myron in charge of sound.
Harbour Night events are held to provide a cultural welcome for the 3,400-passenger cruise ship Victory when it's in port every other Wednesday at Frederiksted. The festivities along the waterfront and in the downtown area run from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.
More than 50 food, arts and crafts vendors will have booths set up, and visitors will have an opportunity to support the fund-raising activities of three not-for-profit groups — Karamu Afi Cultural Arts, St. Croix Animal Shelter and St. Croix Deaf Coalition. These activities are sponsored by the Divi casino, International Asset Management, Kapok Management, The Lost Dog, the local McDonald's and Motown Bar & Restaurant.
Harbour Night is presented by Budget Rent-A-Car, Centennial Wireless, Dalton Associates, the Frederiksted Economic Development Association and the Tourism Department.
Parking on Strand Street will be prohibited Wednesday between 5 p.m. and midnight. Any vehicles along the street after 5 p.m. will be towed at the owner's expense.
