April 16, 2002 – All Saints, Country Day and Good Hope schools face off against defending champion Antilles Tuesday morning for the final rounds of the 2002 V.I. Quiz Bowl.
Five of the nine academic contenders — Central, Charlotte Amalie, Education Complex, Ivanna Eudora Kean and Sts. Peter and Paul high schools — bowed out by the end of Monday's second day of competition in the double-elimination event.
The annual battle of the brains is being broadcast live on WVWI Radio and being recorded for later airing on WTJX-TV. The public is welcome to sit in at the event at the Palms Court Harborview Hotel overlooking downtown Charlotte Amalie.
If the Day 2 proceedings are any indication of things to come, Quiz Bowl enthusiasts have some close contests to look for on Tuesday. Good Hope shaved All Saints Monday morning for a 220-210 win. Country Day took a 400-300 defeat at the hands of Antilles, but then bounded back to triumph over Sts. Peter and Paul, 400-135, and then CAHS, 340-190, later in the day.
At times, matches moved at a slower pace. Country Day and Eudora Kean took turns missing a number of questions in which they were asked to identify Shakespearean quotes, solve math problems, recall details from World War II, and properly identify a new corporate listing on the New York Stock Exchange.
In Tuesday's first contest, Antilles meets Good Hope. Some observers Monday were of the opinion that Country Day vs. Antilles would be the powerhouse pairing to watch.
The winning team will qualify to represent the territory in any one of three National Academic Championship venues at the end of May or in June — in Los Angeles, New Orleans or Washington, D.C.. In addition, the winners will receive a trip to the destination of their choice in the continental United States.
