May 6, 2002 – Bid responses have been opened for the Gallows Bay Dock construction project, and the project, estimated to cost $2.2 million, should be completed within six to eight months.
The Christiansted dock has deteriorated over the years, said a release from the V.I. Port Authority, and the project covers demolishing the existing dock and constructing "a new facility that will be safer and better serve the needs of the traveling public and marine companies that use the dock."
A reinforced concrete deck and new fendering will be built. The project also includes improvements to the esthetic appearance, installation of lighting and a potable water system, and repaving the parking area.
The usual bid award phase is 30 days from day of opening, which in this case was May 2, 2002.
VIPA executive director Gordon A. Finch alerts users that once construction begins, all vessels currently utilizing the Gallows Bay Dock will be temporarily relocated. Most vessels will be directed to the Wilfred "Bomba" Allick Port and Transshipment Center at Krause Lagoon and to the Ann E. Abramson Pier in Frederiksted. The St. Croix/St. Thomas interisland ferry will be stationed at Kings Wharf.
