UVI ST. CROIX TO HOST SEVERAL SUMMER CAMPS

June 4, 2002 – The St. Croix summer Camp Program sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service has an ambitious program, hosting more than 200 youngsters ages 5-14 at three different sites.
The program will delve into science and math, writing and computer skills, but it will concentrate on developing the idea of entrepreneurship. This concept of a "mini-society," however, is not your average "How to Run a Corner Lemonade Stand" summer project.
Registration is under way, on a first-come, first-served basis, for the St. Croix Summer Camp Program sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service. The cost is $100 per child, for the entire six-week program.
The camps will be held at three locations: Alexander Henderson Elementary School, Ricardo Richards Junior High School, and the University of the Virgin Islands' St. Croix campus. The school sites will host groups of children from ages 5-14, with expectation of having 100 children at each site; the UVI site will host a group of 30 participants ages 12-14.
The camps will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with drop-off and pick-up required. Young people should come with drinking water and a snack; lunch will be provided.
The two school sites will work with children in groups of Superkids, ages 5-7; and ages 8-12, with 8-9-year-olds and 10-11-year-olds in separate groups.
The program for Superkids will concentrate on wonders of the world around us, self-esteem, and hands-on math and science.
The 8-12-year-olds will concentrate on science and technology, especially earth, physical and life sciences. One group will link science to agricultural interests; the second group will link science to energy.
The 8-12 groups will also set up a "mini-society," to expose them to entrepreneurship. They will "invent" a country, an empire, a civilization; establish the politics and method of rule and elections, choose a flag, set up currency, and then delve into marketing in their invented society, finding and promoting a product or service.
The group of 12 to 14-year-olds on the UVI campus will concentrate on junior leadership, public speaking, and career exploration and skills. They will have a chance to become UVI students for a day.
All age groups will concentrate in addition on critical writing skills and computer competency.
