July 15, 2002 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today includes these announcements:
Seminar on Cistern Water Quality Set
UVI's Water Resources Research Institute will host a seminar on "Maintaining Water Quality in Cisterns" on Tuesday, July 16. The one-hour seminar begins at 1 p.m. in Teacher Education Building room 101 on the St. Thomas Campus. It will be videoconferenced to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix Campus. The presenter will be Marcella Jennings of St. Thomas' Caribbean Safe Water Lab. A UVI graduate, Jennings has been testing cistern water supplies on St. Thomas for more than ten years. UVI-CES Workshop on Septic Systems Offered
The next workshop in the UVI Cooperative Extension Service's series on home and farm water quality is scheduled for presentation in July. The two-hour, "Understanding Your Septic System" workshop will be presented on the following schedule:
St. Croix – 7 p.m. July 23, in Room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center.
St. Thomas – 5:30 p.m. July 24, in the Training Room of the UVI Sports and Fitness Center.
St. John – 5:30 p.m. July 25, at the Cooperative Extension Service Office in Cruz Bay, upstairs from the Fashion Place.
Topics covered will include: how septic systems function; how to site and design a system; how to operate and maintain a system; failure warning signs; and evaluating septic systems for pollution potential. On St. Thomas: "For Better, For Worse" Ends Successful Extended Run
Congratulations to David Edgecombe and the cast, crew and supporters of "For Better, For Worse." The comedy concluded a six-week run on Sunday, July 14. The play, originally scheduled for a four-week run, drew such an overwhelming response that it was extended for two additional weekends. The Reichhold Center Box Office estimates that nearly 2,000 people attended the play.
On St. Croix: Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival Set
Mango lovers should mark their calendars for the sixth annual "Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival" set for Sunday, July 28, at the St. George Village Botanical Garden on St. Croix from noon to 6 p.m. The event, sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, the St. George Botanical Garden, and V.I. departments of Agriculture and Tourism will include mango and papaya eating competitions, a silent auction of fruits, a farmers' market, garden tours, fruit tasting, a mango cook-off and much more.
