CORRECTIONS SETS VIDEO SESSION ON EMERGENCIES

July 29, 2002 – The V.I. Corrections Bureau is hosting a live, three-hour satellite/ Internet videoconference on emergency preparedness in communities with corrections facilities, at noon Wednesday, July 31, in the St. Croix Curriculum Center.
All private and public personnel connected in any way with correctional facilities are invited. This program is desirable for personnel from corrections agencies, both adult and juvenile facilities, including community-based, and in federal and local jurisdictions, and community partners of these agencies.
The National Institute of Corrections is holding the "Systemic Approaches to Emergency Preparedness Affecting Correctional Communities" conference, in conjunction with The Corrections Learning Network and the NIC Western Regional Field Coordinators.
The comprehensive session, according to a release, will help participants to:
— recognize the nature of a correctional-related emergency;
— identify all responders, resources, and mechanisms for responses to emergencies;
— explore and discuss the elements of a written emergency plan;
— establish assessment strategies for levels of alert and responses, from line staff through the command level;
— clarify agency responsibility for follow-up and debriefing, after emergency action has been taken;
— discuss new trends for future emergency analysis and preparation.
Following the videoconference, participants will engage in local action planning that will cover use of the information and resources provided.
