V.I. TO MARK ANNIVERSARY OF SEPT. 11 ATTACKS

Sept. 9, 2002 – Throughout the territory, as throughout the nation, Wednesday will be a time of recalling and reflecting on the Sept. 11 events of a year ago in New York, Washington, D.C., and western Pennsylvania. Following is a listing of some local activities planned that are open to the public.
Listings are alphabetical by sponsoring organization.

At houses of worship throughout the territory, bells will be rung at 8:45 a.m. (when the American Airlines plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York), 9:03 a.m. (when the United Airlines plane crashed into the South Tower), 9:43 a.m. (when an American plane crashed into the Pentagon) and 10:10 a.m. (when a United plane crashed outside Somerset, Pennsylvania); church bells also will be rung at noon in memory of all of the victims of terrorism on Sept. 11, 2001.
St. Thomas
American Legion Post No. 90 will conduct a ceremony at noon in Emancipation Garden. For more information, call 776-2332.
Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church on Norre Gade will hold an ecumenical service on the theme of "A Religious Response to the First Anniversary of 9-11" at 8:30 a.m. The service is designed to last for a half hour so that people can move on to their places of employment by 9 a.m.
Among religious leaders taking part in the service are: Pastor Jeffrey Gargano, St. Thomas Reformed Church; Imam Musab Abdul-Hakim of Masjid Nur Ahl-Us Sunnah-Islamic Center; Rabbi Arthur Starr, Hebrew Congregation of St. thomas; Pastor Stephan Kienberger of Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church, Canon Ashton Brooks, All Saints Cathedral Church; and Bishop Kinsley Lewis of Memorial Moravian Church.

Global Life Church, 5-2 Estate Raphune, will hold Day of Prayer services from 5 to 6 a.m., from noon to 2 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The church sanctuary will be open for walk-in prayer throughout the day. For more information, call 774-5400.
Rotary Clubs — The Rotary Club of St. Thomas and Rotary Club of St. Thomas II will meet jointly at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort. Guest speakers will be religious leaders from the community as the organizations pause for a period of reflection and spiritual regeneration. For more information, call 690-0307.
St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Smith Bay will observe a "Day of Remembrance, Hope and Healing" at 9 a.m. For more information, call 775-3100.
University of the Virgin Islands — A campus "tree planting for peace" and a commemorative ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. between the Health Center and Student Affairs buildings halfway up the hill to the library and classroom building complex. A moment of silence will be observed at 8:45 a.m., the moment that the first plane crashed into the North Tower. UVI President LaVerne Ragster and campus Chancellor John Leipzig will be among those offering remarks. For more information, call 693-1056.
WTJX/Channel 12 will air a local production, "9/11: The Roller Coaster of Emotions," at 9 p.m. featuring poetry, song, dance and music. Performers will include V.I. Institute of Performing Arts students, the Bertha C. Boschulte Burning Blazers steel orchestra, New York singer-guitarist Linda Chourney and local gospel vocalists. Poet Clifton DeVal Boyd will narrate the program. For more information, call 774-6255.
St. Croix
American Legion Post No. 85 invites members of other community organizations to join in a march that is to step off from Sion Farm at 11 a.m. and process to Island Center for the Performing Arts, where a ceremony will be held. Firefighters, police officers, Emergency Medical Services and the National Guard will join the Legion in the march. For more information, call 773-0345.
Christiansted Seventh-day Adventist Church on Queen Cross Street will hold a public prayer service at 7 p.m. For more information, call 773-1822.
St. Croix United will host a boat parade in the Christiansted harbor starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by a candlelight service in the gazebo area of King's Alley.
University of the Virgin Islands — A conch shell will sound on the campus to signal the start of a moment of silence at the times of the four terrorist tragedies — 8:45 a.m. (plane crash into the North Tower), 9:03 a.m. (plane crash into the South Tower), 9:43 a.m. (plane crash into the Pentagon) and 10:10 a.m. (plane crash outside Somerset, Pennsylvania) in remembrance of the victims and in commemoration of the global impact of the attacks.
Wednesday is also Student Clubs and Organizations Awareness Day on the campus; students will gather in the Melvin H. Evans Center courtyard to discuss the impacts of the terrorist attacks. Student Government Association officers will be installed at noon and members of the Golden Key Honor Society will hand out red, white and blue "peace" pins and "unity" bookmarks throughout the day. UVI flags will be flown at half staff. For more information, call 693-1056.
