V.I. LONG JUMPER WINS CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

March 11, 2003 — Virgin Islands-born Vaughn Walwyn, an NCAA All-America long jumper, took first place in the long jump and helped his Rice University team to second place for the second time in the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
His jump of 25 feet 2 inches is his best for the year, and qualifies him for the Pan American Games, which will be held in the Dominican Republic later in the summer.
Last year he finished third in the United States when he jumped 26 feet 3/4 inches in the NCAA Championships for a Virgin Islands record. Also a sprinter, he runs on the Rice relay teams.
He attended elementary school on St. Croix before moving to Texas. He is the son of Wingrove and Catherine Walwyn of St. Croix. He is a junior majoring in economics/ managerial studies.
