May 22, 2003 – The Port Authority has issued a request for proposals for the construction of the Red Hook Marine Facility on St. Thomas's East End.
According to a VIPA release, plans call for a new passenger terminal of 14,000 square feet which will contain ticket counters, concession areas, restrooms and a waiting area. It will be located near a new dock which will be able to accommodate four ferries at once.
A separate berthing facility for cargo vessels is to be built east of the passenger terminal, "and the existing two-berth dock will remain in place," the release stated.
VIPA also plans to expand the capacity of the adjacent parking lot to 150 vehicles and "to add significant aesthetic improvements to the site."
A pre-bid conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 4 at the Port Authority administration building across from Cyril E. King Airport. Sealed bids must be submitted by June 27.
The government of the Virgin Islands through the Public Works Department is contributing $2.5 million to the marine terminal project in funds received from Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds issued by the Federal Highway Administration, the release stated. The U.S. Economic Development Administration contributed $1.5 million to the project, and VIPA will provide the remainder of needed funding.
