Senator Louis Patrick Hill says the VI Internal Revenue Bureau will soon gain some much needed muscle. Hill contends there would be no need to cut salaries or raise taxes if the present taxes owed were paid and collected.
He says there is evidence suggesting the government is losing considerable amounts of tax revenue from businesses and individuals that are evading their tax obligations.
Senator Hill recently spoke to the Department of Interior about enlisting the expertise and support of retired US Internal Revenue Service auditors and agents to assist the Bureau’s efforts to increase revenues and compliance. Interior expressed its willingness to support the Territory in acquiring whatever technical assistance it needs to help itself.
Hill asked for and received Governor Charles Turnbull’s support in requesting Interior’’s assistance during this weeks meeting between the Governor and senators. The Governor agreed to make a formal request of Interior to arrange for retired IRS agents to support and assist IRB in its efforts to collect the taxes due to the Territory.
Senator Hill continues to argue that fixing the government systems, structures, policies, and attitudes that foster waste and leakage is the only prudent action that will end this cycle of fiscal crisis.
