RENOVATIONS UNDER WAY AT VESSUP SEWAGE PLANT

June 18, 2003 – Major structural repair work is under way at the Vessup wastewater treatment plant in Estate Nazareth to bring the facility into compliance with federal standards.
The work has been undertaken "as part of the directives of the U.S. District Court's consent order," Public Works Wayne Callwood said in a release distributed on Wednesday, and it should be completed by the end of August.
Rusting and deterioration of the walls and joints of the plant tank have "compromised its integrity, the release stated. The facility was designed to process 300,000 gallons of sewage a day, it said, and "during the repair period, the influent flow will be trucked to the Mangrove Lagoon plant on a daily basis for treatment."
According to Callwood, the renovation work includes coating the tank walls with a multi-layered liner called Spectrashield.
"Many of the territory's treatment plants and pump stations are in need of equipment repair or replacement," Callwood said. He said his department is working to comply with the consent order, "as well as providing preventive maintenance to enhance the performance of the sewer collection system."
