UVI BULLETIN BOARD

June 30, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI to Observe Emancipation Day, Independence Day
UVI will be closed Thursday and Friday, July 3 and 4, in observance of Virgin Islands Emancipation Day and U.S. Independence Day, respectively. University offices will reopen and summer session classes will resume on Monday, July 7.
Thirty Scholarships for Inclusive Early Childhood Education Program Offered
Thirty academic scholarships are being offered for new participants in UVI's Inclusive Early Childhood Education Associate Degree program. The deadline for applications is July 25. The scholarships are being made available by the V.I. University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) and the Office of Child Care, Regulatory and Volunteer Services, in the V.I. Human Services Department.
Applicants must be currently providing educational and developmental services for children three to five years old, and have successfully completed introductory university English courses or have scored at least 500 on the English section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

Community Survey 2003 Covering St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John
Representatives from UVI's Eastern Caribbean Center are conducting the V.I. Community Survey 2003. The primary topics covered by the 2003 survey are housing and population. Results will be used by government and private-sector planners to help improve the social, educational, health and economic conditions of the community. Interviewers, who are visiting households on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, are carrying University of the Virgin Islands identification. The university requests the cooperation of interview subjects. Unlike the census, this is a sample survey and not every household will be interviewed. St. Croix Golden Key Honor Society Sets General Meeting on July 11
A general meeting of the UVI Golden Key International Honor Society is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 11, in the Associate Chancellor's conference room on the second floor of the Great House on UVI's St. Croix campus. All members of the Golden Key Honor Society are invited to attend. For more information call 713-9743.
St. Croix's Mango Melee Scheduled for July 6
The St. Croix Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival is scheduled for noon to 6:30 p.m. on July 6 at the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 5-12. Children five years old and younger are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Food, music, a farmers' market, mango eating competition, ice cream making, garden tours, craft vendors, workshops and more are planned. For more information call 692-2874 or 292-4060.
The festival is sponsored by the St. George Village Botanical Garden, UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, Agricultural Experiment Station, and the V.I. departments of Agriculture and Tourism.
SBDC Offers Microsoft Access Workshop on July 9 on St. Croix
UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct an "Introduction to Microsoft Access" workshop from 5:45 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, at the UVI-SBDC Training Center located in the Sunshine Mall lower level, St. Croix.
Admission is $20. A $5 discount is available to individuals who register and pay by Monday, July 7. UVI faculty, staff and students are admitted free but they must pre-register. For more information and to pre-register, call UVI-SBDC at 692-5270.
UVI Web Site Features New Tuition, Fee Information
The UVI Web site now features a complete listing of the tuition and fee increases approved by the UVI Board of Trustees on June 21.

Call for Presentations Issued for Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference
A call for presentations has been issued by the organizers of the eighth V.I. Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference, to be held Dec. 4-5, 2003, at the Westin St. John Resort.
Individuals involved in pollution prevention or water quality research, education, demonstration or monitoring projects and extension programs are invited to participate.
Presentations should address some aspect of the following topics: alternative on-site wastewater treatment systems; watershed and/or gut restoration; erosion, sediment and stormwater control; marina/boat best management practices; impacts of pollutants on terrestrial and/or coastal habitats; and environmental education and outreach.
Abstract proposals for oral and poster presentations will be accepted by the conference planning committee until Sept. 2. Product and information exhibits focusing on conference topics are also being solicited. Contact the V.I. Planning and Natural Resources Department for details by Sept. 30.
The conference is sponsored by the V.I. Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Committee. The committee, which provides oversight to DPNR's Pollution Management Program, consists of representatives from federal and territorial agencies, UVI, and local non-profit organizations and businesses.
