July 3, 2003 – The American Red Cross is hoping to get some much-needed disaster shelter supplies from Pirate Radio's Red White and Blue beach barbecue party on July 6 at Hull Bay and the Hull Bay Hideaway, Bar and Grill.
In conjunction with the party, Sen. Roosevelt David is sponsoring a beach cleanup from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 5. This is "a fantastic way for he community to get involved and help protect our environment," David said in a release. David praised Patrick Charles Enterprises, "whose dumpster will be required to assist in this."
Admission for the party is free but Pirate Radio (96.1 FM) is inviting patrons to bring a disaster shelter item to donate to the American Red Cross. The party starts at 1 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m.
Shelter items needed include bottled water, toilet paper, first aid supplies, paper towels, toothpaste, liquid or powder juices, batteries, bleach, feminine hygiene products, infant and adult diapers, as well as other baby products such as powder and soup.
"This may seem like an extraordinary request," says Bill Young, the Red Cross' emergency services director. "But with a territorial population of 110,000, if we were only to provide for 10 percent of our vulnerable population, we would need resources for 11,000 persons."
This year's hurricane season is predicted to be an above-average active season and "Therefore we welcome whatever [the community] may be able to offer, "according to Young.
