July 3, 2003 – Police plan to set up sobriety checkpoints over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
A release sent Thursday evening from St. Thomas Deputy Police Chief Elvin R. Fahie Sr. said that from Friday through Sunday the Police Department's Traffic Bureau will be "conducting sobriety checkpoints" on Veterans Drive and the Red Hook, Smith Bay, Frydenhoj, Brookman and Magens Bay roads.
The release, sent in the name of the St. Thomas-St. John-Water Island District, mentioned only the checkpoints on St. Thomas.
Police Chief Novelle Francis Jr. said when contacted Thursday night that sobriety checkpoints would also be set up on St. Croix, but that he did not want to give away their locations.
The East End St. Thomas checkpoints would appear to be a safeguard against revelers returning from St. John's July 4th Celebration festivities who may have done too much partying.
