BAJO EL SOL SHOWING SIMONSEN'S PHOTOGRAPHY

July 6, 2003 – Bajo el Sol Gallery will open a special summer exhibition on Saturday that showcases work by St. John photographer Steve Simonsen from his new book, "Living Art," to be released in November.
There will be a meet-the-artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery, located in Mongoose Junction.
Simonsen, who "has stayed and flourished" on St. John while many other photographers have come and gone, "celebrates what is still pristine on St. John," according to a release.
His quest often has taken him beneath the surface of the sea, where he has logged 12,000 dives and the equivalent of 13 months of bottom time in pursuit of underwater imagery. He has also traversed the island's rocky ridges and been known to hang out of a helicopter to get the stunning aerial views that make "Living Art" a work of reference as well as of art.
Simonsen and his wife, Janet, were first attracted to St. John 15 years ago by the V.I. National Park and the island's vibrant art community. His work has appeared in publications of the Smithsonian, the National Geographic Society and the Audubon Society and in the periodicals Lonely Planet, Sail Islands and Caribbean Travel and Life.
The exhibition will hang through the end of July. Bajo el Sol's regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday. For more information, call 693-7070.
