July 7, 2003 — St. Croix District outstanding teachers and 2003 retirees were honored at an awards program June 22 at Gertrude's Restaurant.
District Superintendent Terrence T. Joseph told the teacher honorees, "I am always extremely proud when I can say something positive about Virgin Islanders who have served with distinction, especially in the field of education. You are testimonies of this excellence and deserve our heartfelt praises."
Germaine Powell, a paraprofessional at Evelyn M. Williams Elementary School, received the highest accolades as "Employee of the Year." Powell will begin the next school term as a first-year teacher, a release said.
The district's "Teacher of the Year" honor went to Theodore Phillip of Lew Muckle Elementary School. Since he began teaching at Muckle in 1992, Phillip has served on the school improvement team and academic and technology committees. He was also chairperson of the mathematics department and the sixth-grade class, coach of the school's soccer team and Math Olympiad, and a Saturday Academy Tutor.
Also recognized were 38 retirees for their dedication and untiring service. "When you started your career, retirement seemed an endless distance away, but here it is," Joseph addressed them.
