July 21, 2003 — University of the Virgin Islands Summer Science Enrichment Academies The St. Croix campus hosted seventh and eighth graders, and the St. Thomas campus hosted high school students. The summer academies are designed to retain and rekindle students’ interest in science and mathematics and to encourage minority students to pursue career goals in these areas, said a release. They are funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The St. Croix campus, which has been holding the Junior SSEA for 7th and 8th graders, hosted 20 students. The program focused on science, mathematics and computer skills training.
Through a $150,000 NASA grant, the purchase of 40 laptop computers, support equipment and Internet-linking technology, allowed each St. Croix student to be assigned his or her own computer.
The St. Thomas campus hosted 44 high school students. They are divided into two groups, one studying concepts based on the theme "Inner Space – Outer Space" and the other "Science and Diseases." The other 20 laptops were assigned to the St. Thomas program.
A closing ceremony for the Junior SSEA will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, in Evans Center room 401 on the St. Croix campus.
A closing ceremony and poster presentation for the program on the St. Thomas campus will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at the Sports and Fitness Center.
