July 24, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI Budget Presentation to V.I. Legislature Available Online
The presentation of UVI's proposed budget for fiscal year 2003-2004, made by UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster to the Finance Committee of the 25th V.I. Legislature on July 21, is now available on the UVI Web site. It is in the "President's Office" pages and also available at this direct link.
Christian Albrecht University Study Group to Attend UVI Symposium, Lectures
UVI and Christian Albrecht University of Kiel, Germany, will co-sponsor a symposium on the social, economic and political relations of the former Danish West Indies and the resulting cultural influences from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 25, in room 101 of the business education building on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
Symposium participants will include Dr. Aimery Caron, a former French consul; Dr. Ole Hagemann, Stefanie Robl and Dr. Thomas Riis of the Christian Albrecht University; Gail Shulterbrandt of the Friends of Denmark; and UVI professor Dr. Malik Sekou.
Special guests at the symposium will be the 18 members (including 14 students) of a study tour group from Christian Albrecht University. The St. Thomas symposium is free and open to the public.
The Christian Albrecht group will also tour St. Croix. A series of short lectures is planned from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, in Evans Center room 401 on the St. Croix campus. Presenters will include William Cissel of the National Park Service, and part-time UVI history instructors Dr. Elizabeth Rezende and Dr. Lauren Larsen. The lecture presentations are free and open to the public.

International Students Advised to Obtain New Travel Documents
UVI is advising all international students to contact the school's enrollment management or admissions offices to obtain new travel documents. Current travel documents used by international students, known as I-20s, will expire on Aug. 1. UVI has recently been entered into the federal government's new Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) system. New I-20 documents are generated from this system. International students are urged to visit in person or call the office of enrollment management at 693-1220 or the admissions office at 693-1150 to obtain their travel documents. More information is also available from UVI's director of enrollment management, Carolyn Cook, at 693-1224.
Internet Registration Continues for Returning UVI Students
Returning UVI students can beat the long lines at registration by registering via the Internet. Fall semester 2003 registration for returning UVI students is now under way online. Links to the secure Web site that students are using for the registration process are available on the UVI home page (click on link at end of article). Students must obtain personal identification numbers from their faculty advisors in order to log on to the registration page.
UVI Registrar Robert Fontaine stresses that enrollment in classes is not guaranteed until payment is made. After registering, students must visit the cashier's offices on either campus to pay tuition and fees. Aug. 11 is the deadline for returning students to pay tuition and fees. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of classes. For more information call 693-1160 on St. Thomas or 692-4158 on St. Croix.
UVI Financial Aid Students Advised to Visit Cashier's Offices
UVI Students who have registered for the fall 2003 semester and who are receiving financial aid are advised to visit the cashier's offices on St.
Thomas and St. Croix to accept their charges no later than Aug. 11. The cashier's office on St. Thomas is located in the Chancellor's Building – Quarters B. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
VIMAS to Sponsor Presentation on the Ecology of St. Croix Salt Pond
The V.I. Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) on St. Croix will sponsor a presentation by researcher Dr. Elizabeth Gladfelter entitled "Seasonal migration and water-dependency as factors controlling the diversity and abundance of birds at the SEA Southgate Coastal Reserve" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, in Evans Center room 501 on the UVI St. Croix campus. Dr. Gladfelter is one of several scientists from the Woods Hole Ocean Oceanographic Institution of Massachusetts who have been conducting fieldwork at the reserve for the past six months. Her presentation will outline data developed in these studies. The reserve, one of St. Croix's largest salt ponds, lies on the island's northeast shore. Study results will be used to help develop a management guide for the St. Croix Environmental Association which owns the reserve. The presentation is free and open to the public. Real Estate Salesperson's Course Offered on St. Croix – Registration Extended
A five-week, Real Estate Salesperson's Course will be offered on UVI's St. Croix campus on Saturdays beginning July 26. Designed as a preparatory course for individuals planning to take the Real Estate Salesperson's Licensing Exam, the course is also open to persons interested in real estate careers or those simply considering the sale or purchase of property. Real estate law, financing, appraisal, contracts and mathematics will be covered.
The cost is $450. Included are 38 hours of instruction (sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each Saturday through Aug. 23), manuals and registration fees. There are no prerequisites. Registration for the course has been extended until noon on Friday, July 25. The course is offered by the UVI Community and Personal Development Unit. "ABCs of Small Business Loans" Seminars Set for St. Thomas, St. Croix
The UVI Small Business Development Center, FirstBank Virgin Islands and the Government Development Bank will conduct seminars titled "The ABCs of Small Business Loans" on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
The St. Thomas seminar is scheduled for 5:45 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, at the UVI-SBDC Training Center at Nisky Center. The St. Croix seminar will take place from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at the UVI-SBDC Training Center, Sunshine Mall on St. Croix.
Admission is free. The seminar will provide guidelines for individuals starting small business. For more information and to pre-register contact UVI-SBDC at 776-3206 on St. Thomas or 692-5270 on St. Croix by Wednesday, July 30.
