Aug. 15, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued Aug. 14 has these announcements:
UVI Taking Steps to Protect Computer Network from W32/Blaster Worm
In response to the recent appearance of the highly publicized computer worm known as W32/Blaster, which exploits the Microsoft operating system, UVI has issued precautionary instructions for students, faculty and staff accessing the University's computer network.
Individuals – including students, faculty and staff – who are returning to campus with personal or laptop computers may not connect those computers to the UVI network until a special security patch has been installed. Details on how to download and install the patch are available on the UVI Web site (address below).
V.I.'s Remarkable Big Trees Subject of Slide Show, Lecture, Exhibit
UVI Professor Dr. Robert Nicholls presented a slide show and lecture about remarkable big trees of the U.S. Virgin Islands Thursday at the V.I. Cultural Heritage Institute on St. Thomas. The presentation opened an exhibition of 30 photographs of remarkable big trees, which will be on view from Aug. 15 through Sept. 12 at the Institute, which is located at 5-6 Kongens Gade (Education Street) in Charlotte Amalie.
Extension Service to Offer Free Septic System Workshops
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service will conduct free workshops on "Understanding Your Septic System" on St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix in August. The workshops are open to the general public and will cover how septic systems function, how to design and site a system, failure warning signs and system evaluation. The workshops are scheduled as follows:
St. John: August 19, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the UVI Cooperative Extension Service office (upstairs from Fashion Palace) in Cruz Bay
St. Thomas: August 21, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Training Room of the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus
St. Croix: August 26, 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus.

St. Croix Accounting Association Plans General Meeting Aug. 24
The UVI Accounting Association, St. Croix campus chapter, will hold its first general meeting for the academic year from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, in room 716 on the St. Croix campus (next to the Freshman Lab). Courses Designed to Help Professionals Enhance Writing Skills
Business professionals can improve their writing skills with two new courses offered by UVIs Community and Personal Development Unit. The courses – "Essentials of Business Writing" and "Sharpening Your Writing Edge" – are designed to help individuals master basic skills in writing letters and reports and to strengthen general writing abilities. Courses will be taught by an experienced writer and editor. Sessions will be kept small to ensure individualized attention. Sessions will be held as follows:
— Essentials of Business Writing: 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 2 to Sept. 23.
— Sharpening Your Writing Edge: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays from Oct. 4 to Oct. 25.
The cost for each course is $150. Individuals who wish to enroll in both programs will receive a $25 discount. Space is limited; call UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit at 693-1100 or by e-mail to reserve your space.
Call for Presentations Issued for Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference
A call for presentations has been issued by the organizers of the eighth V.I. Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference, which will be held Dec. 4-5, at the Westin St. John Resort.
Individuals involved in pollution prevention or water quality research, education, demonstration or monitoring projects and extension programs are invited to participate. Presentations should address some aspect of the following topics: alternative on-site wastewater treatment systems; watershed and/or gut restoration; erosion, sediment and storm water control; marina/boat best management practices; impacts of pollutants on terrestrial and/or coastal habitats; and environmental education and outreach.
Abstract proposals for oral and poster presentations will be accepted by the conference planning committee until Sept. 2.
