Aug. 16, 2003 – The U.S. Postal Service has presented V.I. Postmaster Louis Jackson with a national public relations award, the first time a postmaster in the territory has received such recognition.
Jackson was attending the National Association of Postmasters 2003 convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when he learned on Aug. 7 that he was one of the award recipients.
The Benjamin Award was presented to 36 postmasters, supervisors and customer relations coordinators. According to a release, it is the highest public relations honor for postmasters, managers and supervisors across the country and recognizes those who are most successful in generating positive publicity for the U.S.P.S.
"These are the folks who have gone the extra mile to promote the many good things the U.S. Postal Service does each day," the association's president, Wally Lihovik, said.
Deputy Postmaster General John Nolan presented the winners with trophies and certificates for outstanding results in community outreach. Jackson's award reads in part:
"Postmaster Louis Jackson and the employees at the St. Thomas Post Office worked hard to keep their customers informed on Post Office closings and retail hours, mailing regulations, window services, and other postal issues. Louis and his employees were recognized at an employee appreciation breakfast presentation for outstanding delivery achievement during one of the worst winters in recorded history while their delivery scores achieved over 95 percent consistency. Postmaster Jackson participated in the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce 75th Business Expo. He was recognized by the 24th Legislature of the Virgin Islands for his involvement in the community."
