Aug. 23, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued Aug. 21 has these announcements:
Legal Assistant Exam Review Course Offered on St. Thomas
A 10-week course designed to prepare legal professionals to obtain nationally recognized certification will be offered on St. Thomas beginning Sept. 8 at UVI. The Legal Assistant Certification Review Course, offered by UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit, will cover all substantive areas included in the legal assistant exam that will be offered in December. UVI, which is now certified as a national test site, will administer the exam. A fee of $995 will cover registration, course materials and 60 hours of instructions.

Lecture on 'Planning for Academic Success' Set August 27
The UVI community is invited to attend a lecture on "Planning for Academic Success" by Dr. Howard Adams, former executive director of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science (GEM) at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Adams' presentation is scheduled for 3 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, in Chase Auditorium (Business Education room 110) on the St. Thomas Campus. His visit to UVI is funded by the MARC Program.
Dr. Adams holds a bachelor's degree from Norfolk State University, a master's from Virginia State University, and a doctorate from Syracuse University. In addition to his work with GEM, Dr. Adams was named to the US Congressional Task Force on Women, Minorities and Handicapped in Science and Technology by former President Reagan and has received the National Society of Black Engineers Golden Torch Award for "Lifetime Achievement in Academia. UVI Employees Can Adjust Insurance Plans Through Sept. 15
The UVI Human Resources Department has announced that all regular, full-time employees can make changes to their medical, dental and life insurance plans through Sept. 15. Individuals should contact the Human Resources office at 693-1426 with questions or to obtain Enrollment/Change forms.

V.I.'s Remarkable Big Trees Display Continues Through Sept. 12
An exhibition of 30 photographs of remarkable big trees of the U.S. Virgin Islands — organized by UVI Professor Dr. Robert Nicholls — is on display through September 12 at the V.I. Cultural Heritage Institute, located at 5-6 Kongens Gade (Education Street) in Charlotte Amalie. More information is available at www.bigtrees.net.

Extension Service to Offer Free Septic System Workshop Aug. 26
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service is conducting the last of three free workshops on Understanding Your Septic System on St. Croix Tuesday. The workshop is open to the general public and will cover how septic systems function, how to design and site a system, failure warning signs and system evaluation.
The St. Croix workshop is from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center. Please confirm attendance by calling Julie Wright or Dale Morton at 693-1080.

St. Croix Accounting Association Plans General Meeting Aug. 24
The UVI Accounting Association, St. Croix campus chapter, will hold its first general meeting for the academic year from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, in Evans Center room 716 on the St. Croix campus (next to the Freshman Lab). Courses Designed to Help Professionals Enhance Writing Skills
Business professionals can improve their writing skills with two new courses offered by the University of the Virgin Islands Community and Personal Development Unit. The courses — "Essentials of Business Writing" and "Sharpening Your Writing Edge" — are designed to help individuals master basic skills in writing letters and reports and to strengthen their general writing abilities. An experienced writer and editor will teach the courses. Sessions will be kept small to ensure individualized attention. Sessions will be held as follows:
Essentials of Business Writing: 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 2-23
Sharpening Your Writing Edge: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays from Oct. 4-25.
The cost for each course is $150. Individuals who wish to enroll in both programs will receive a $25 discount. Space is limited; call UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit at 693-1100 or by e-mail to reserve your space.
