HOUSE HOMELAND SECURITY PANEL TO VISIT THE V.I.

Feb. 5, 2003 – The U.S. House Select Committee on Homeland Security has scheduled a visit to the Virgin Islands at the end of February that will focus on "our homeland security, border and immigration issues," Delegate Donna M. Christensen announced on Thursday.
The visit by the committee, of which Christensen is a member, will be part of a four-day tour Feb. 26-29 that also is to include stops at Miami and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
While in the Virgin Islands, Christensen said in a release, committee members will be briefed on High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area operations territorywide and will tour the Hovensa refinery on St. Croix.
Since being named to the committee last year, Christensen said, she has pressed for it to schedule a visit to the Virgin Islands in recognition of the territory's vital positioning as part of the nation's southern border. She said she is pleased that her colleagues "have decided to come and see for themselves what our security concerns are."
Also on Thursday, Christensen announced that because of the bioterrorism scare in the nation's capital, postal mail service to the House of Representatives has been suspended until Capitol Hill police are confident that it is safe to resume delivery. As a result, the delegate said, constituents wishing to contact her in writing should do so for the time being via fax or e-mail.
Her Washington fax number is (202) 225-5517. E-mail should be sent to her House mail address.
