Historical Preservation

Senator Roosevelt David made it clear in the Committee on Environmental Protection meeting earlier today that, "Historical Preservation spawns economic development, invites pride within a culture and further promotes teaching. Preservation of one’s history generates a better understanding of past, present and future. This economy is generated through Tourism. It is not to say that tourism is the only fuel that drives this territory, but it is evident that historical preservation of our buildings, streets, and parks will open the Virgin Islands to more markets."
Senator David discussed the amount of enthusiasts that come to areas out of respect for historical preservation. "People young and old plan vacations to see the sights and sounds of a given area. People flock to Europe, to view old world buildings, Cathedrals, and gardens. They tour the southeastern United States to see places like Charleston, Savannah, and St. Augustine. Areas like Gettysburg have become places where reenactments are the norm. Here in the Virgin Islands we have some of the oldest buildings under the US Flag. Once we preserve our buildings, and create more incentives for the preservation of historical properties, we will create avenues that will benefit residents, guests, and students."
Senator David concluded his statement by discussing the plans for a library on the East End. "I proposed an East End Library in the 23rd Legislature because of the population density of the area. When this project comes to fruition children will have a state of the art facility after school where they can study, do research for school, and other various projects. This instrument will be a fundamental tool in educating our youth about the importance of our cultural history, historical preservation of our towns and the overall education within the 21st Century."
