Aug. 4, 2004 – Be part of the solution when it comes to helping fund police efforts on St. Croix, Kevin N. Jackson said in announcing as series of fund-raisers by the Community-Police Partnership Fund.
The efforts by Jackson and two benefactors who wish to remain anonymous kick off Saturday with volunteers selling raffle tickets at Sunny Isle Shopping Center for the winner's choice of a Honda Accord or a Honda CRV. The anonymous benefactors funded the car purchase.
Jackson said to look for the raffle sales table in the shopping center parking lot. "You can't miss it," he said.
Raffle tickets are $10 each, or 11 for $100. For those who can't make it to Sunny Isle on Saturday, they're also being sold at Pancho's, the WSVI-TV office, Cormorant Beach Club, Divi Carina Bay Resort, the Police Department's Patrick Sweeney Headquarters and the Police Administration Building in Hannah's Rest.
A second activity is set for Saturday evening – a cocktail fund-raiser at the Cormorant Beach Club from 6 p.m. until. Tickets are $15. There will be food by Purples Catering Services and dancing to the music of the Ronnie Russell Quartet. "It's a party with a purpose," Jackson said.
Upcoming activities to benefit the fund after that are:
On Aug. 14 – a dance at Pier 69 in Frederiksted, from 9 p.m. until. Tickets are $15.
On Aug. 22 – a daylong beach blowout at Divi Carina Bay Resort. A $10 ticket gets you a plate of food and one drink. The day will include games, Police Department displays and an opportunity for parents and guardians to get their children fingerprinted. Jackson said this is a good idea in case a child is involved in an emergency.
On Aug. 29 – the drawing of the winning Honda raffle ticket. Jackson said plans are still firming up for this event, but it will probably be held at the Divi.
Jackson, who is assistant general manager at the Divi, said he and the benefactors decided to put their efforts into these fund-raisers because the Police Department needs help to obtain needed equipment. It's an opportunity for everyone in the community to "get up off your keister and do something," he said.
Money raised at the events will be channeled through the St. Croix Foundation for Community Development, Jackson said.
Police Department officials are delighted with the effort. Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesman, said the department "wholeheartedly" said yes when approached with the idea.
He said the Police Department is now working on plans to partner with a St. Thomas group to fund raise, too, and that it hopes to find a St. John group interested in a similar project.
Jackson said St. Croix residents and business community members have already contributed, with Sunny Isle Shopping Center, the Cormorant Beach Club, the Divi, WSVI-TV, Purples Catering Service, Global Capital Advisors, Stratenomics VI LLC and Strategic VI signed on as sponsors.
