Rotarians Giving Out 640 'First Day of School' Packets

Aug. 24, 2004 – On Wednesday, members of Rotary East Club of St. Thomas will pay their annual visit to elementary schools — 10 of them this year — bearing gifts for first graders of "first day of school" packets containing reading books, notebooks, rulers, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, glue sticks, crayons and scissors.
Rotarians got together last week to assemble about 640 of the packets, which will be distributed to pupils at Leonard Dober, Joseph Gomez, Michael J. Kirwan, Hebert Lockhart, Evelyn Marcelli, Ulla Muller, E. Benjamin Oliver, Peace Corps, Joseph Sibilly and Jane E. Tuitt Elementary Schools.
The packets "will allow the first graders in these elementary schools to begin the new school year with supplies that are required by the Department of Education," a Rotary East release stated.
This is the sixth year that the Rotary club has sponsored the "first day of school" project. Susan Roy and Michael Uhlig coordinated the effort this time.
