UVI to Close St. Thomas Campus as Frances Passes
UVI's St. Thomas campus will be closed on Tuesday, Aug. 31, as Hurricane Frances is expected to pass north of the Virgin Islands. No videoconference classes between campuses will take place. Administrative offices will be closed on the St. Thomas campus. Physical Plant employees, security personnel and other essential personnel are expected to report to work at the regularly scheduled times. The St. Croix campus will remain open for regular operations. Both campuses are expected to resume a normal class schedule on Wednesday.
UVI Offers Orientation Conferences for Grant Programs
The University of the Virgin Islands will offer orientation conferences on September 9 and 10 for two federal grant programs designed to assist individuals operating small businesses involved in research and technology related endeavors. UVI faculty members involved in research and technology are also encouraged to attend.
The programs are the Small Business Innovation Research Program and the Small Business Technology Transfer Program. The conference will be held on St. Thomas on Thursday, September 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Nisky Center. On St. Croix, the conference will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, September 10, in Evans Center Room 401 on UVI's St. Croix campus.
Interested individuals must reserve space in one of the sessions no later than Friday, September 3. To reserve a space, call the UVI-SBDC office 340-776-3206 by 4:30 p.m. on September 3. Agriculture Students to be Featured on 'Face to Face' on Sept. 1
Louis Petersen of the University of the Virgin Islands and the seven young adults who recently returned from an agricultural training in Mississippi will be guests on WTJX's "Face to Face" television program at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1. The Virgin Islands students – Shamika George, Sekou George, Monique Fahie, Mark Saunders, Akiz Jackson, Kendall Petersen, Jr. and Anubi Davis – attended the intensive eight-week Summer 2004 Sustainable Agriculture Training Institute at Alcorn State University in Mississippi. Petersen, UVI's Cooperative Extension Service (CES) supervisor, and members of the VI Resource Conservation and Development Council took the lead in applying for a grant through the U.S. Forest Service which provided full scholarships for the participants.
VI-EPSCoR Science Seminar Series Continues Sept. 3
David Booth, a scientist from the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, will present the next in the VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures at the University of the Virgin Islands. Booth's lecture is titled "Paradise Lost – Ecology and Dispersal of Coral Reef Fishes Outside Their Ranges." It is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3. The seminar is free and open to the public. It will originate in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus.
The series will continue each Friday through Nov. 19. The September 10 lecture will be presented by UVI Professor Richard Hall and his assistant Tara Steward. The title is "Neural Circuits in Lobsters." The series is hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. UVI to Observe Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 6
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 6. UVI classes will resume their normal schedules and University offices will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 7.

First Meeting of UVI's St. Thomas Graduating Class of 2005 Set Sept. 11
All University of the Virgin Islands students on the St. Thomas campus who expect to graduate in 2005 are encouraged to attend the first meeting for prospective graduates on Saturday, Sept. 11. The meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. at the Windward Passage Hotel in Charlotte Amalie. The agenda includes election of class officers and the dissemination of information for seniors. Forensic Archeology Lecture Set Sept. 13 on St. Croix
Registered Professional Archaeologist David Hayes will discuss his recent forensic archeological project involving the relocation of human remains found in a St. Croix church yard in a lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, in the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will cover what can be learned from older human remains and issues involved in recovery and relocation of such bones. Student Organizations Registration Due Sept. 15 on St. Thomas
Wednesday, Sept. 15, is the deadline for student organizations active during the 2004-2005 academic year to register with the UVI Student Activities Office on the St. Thomas campus. Remarkable Big Trees Photography Exhibit at UVI's Paiewonsky Library
An exhibit of thirty photographs of some of U.S. Virgin Islands' most remarkable big trees is on display at the University of the Virgin Islands' Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus. The photos, taken by UVI Prof. Robert Nicholls, are from a project titled "Remarkable Big Trees of Cultural Interest in the USVI." The project was sponsored by UVI and the Urban & Community Forestry Assistance Program. A U.S.V.I. register of big trees has also been created which includes the locations and proportions of 151 of the largest trees on the three islands. The register can be accessed at www.bigtrees.net. Nicholls, a UVI associate professor of education, served as director for the big trees project. He can advise on class activities developed around the exhibition and register.
