Sept. 22, 2004 – The St Croix Environmental Association V.I. ReLeaf program has partnered with Farmers In Action, St. Croix Foundation and V.I. Department of Agriculture to celebrate Arbor Day this year by planting 100 native trees along the Queen Mary Highway. The Weeden Foundation provides funding for the project.
The trees will be planted along the roadside from Paradise intersection to the Territorial Court at Kingshill The community is invited to join project partners at 8 a.m., at Paradise shanty. Please call 773-1989 to volunteer.
The first Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872 and became an official holiday in that state in 1885. J. Sterling Morton, a journalist and lover of nature, proposed the holiday to encourage tree planting in a state where few trees grew.
Arbor Day is celebrated in countries all over the world and in every state in the United States including most territories. Worldwide people recognize the importance of trees for shade, erosion control, wildlife habitat, fuel, food, air quality, beauty, lumber and much more.
