A student vs. faculty and staff softball game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, on the St. Croix campus. The game will take place on the field next to the residence halls. Dr. Marc Boumedine to Present VI-EPSCoR Science Seminar Sept. 24
UVI Professor Dr. Marc Boumedine will present the next in the VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures at the University of the Virgin Islands from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24. Boumedine's subject will be data mining. The title is "From Data to Knowledge: A Data Mining Approach Towards Knowledge Discovery." This presentation will discuss issues, applications, challenges and future trends on data mining. The seminar is free and open to the public. It will originate in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 713 on the St. Croix campus. The series continues each Friday through Nov. 19. It is hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. Science Academies to Open Sept. 25; Application Deadline Extended to Sept. 21
The University of the Virgin Islands will begin its fall semester Saturday Science Awareness Academies for junior and senior high school students from throughout the territory on Saturday, Sept. 25. UVI Fall Research Symposium Set Sept. 25 in Sports and Fitness Center
The fourth annual University of the Virgin Islands Fall Research Symposium will take place at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. Approximately 30 UVI science, mathematics, engineering and technology students will use posters to showcase research they completed during the past academic year or during summer research programs on St. Croix, St. Thomas and the U.S. mainland. Queen's Committee to Hold Second Audition Sunday, Sept. 26
A second open audition for entertainers who would like to perform at the Miss UVI competition will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26, in the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. The University of the Virgin Islands Queen's Committee is seeking entertainers who can perform short skits, stand-up comedy, poetry readings, dances, songs, stepping and instrumentals. Remembrance Service for Mary Zayac Scheduled Sept. 29
A remembrance service for the late Mary Zayac, who worked for five years as an computer specialist and instructor at the University of the Virgin Islands, has been scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The service will be held in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on the St. Thomas campus, with a video link to Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus. Friends, colleagues, students and individuals from the Virgin Islands community are invited to attend. A portion of the service will be set aside for individuals who wish to share personal remembrances of Mary.
St. Thomas Campus Bookstore to Close for Inventory Sept. 29 – Oct. 1
The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus will be closed from Wednesday, Sept. 29, through Friday, Oct. 1, while the staff conducts inventory. The Bookstore will re-open on Monday, Oct. 4. A pre-inventory sale, with discounts of 40 to 75 percent off on selected supplies, will continue through Tuesday, Sept. 28.
Sessions Set Sept. 29-30 on Bowling Green State's Accounting Master's Program
Information sessions for individuals interested in pursuing a Master's degree in accounting from Bowling Green (Ohio) State University will be presented at the University of the Virgin Islands on Sept. 29 and 30. Bowling Green Prof. Dr. Alan Lord will conduct the sessions as well as personal interviews with interested students. Scholarships and grants for selected individuals who hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or who are within one year of obtaining that degree. Interested persons must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and must submit a resume and an official college transcript one day prior to meetings with Prof. Lord.

Activities Fair to Feature Voter Registration, Introduce Miss UVI Contestants
The annual UVI St. Thomas campus Activities Fair set for Thursday, Sept. 30, will include events and activities designed to appeal to the entire University community as well as the general public. Informational displays from 16 student organizations and a variety of University offices such as Counseling and Human Resources are planned. Health screening and Virgin Islands voter registration are also scheduled. And finally, the formal introduction of the six 2004 Miss UVI contestants will cap the day.
The fair, dubbed UVI September Fest: Putting the Pieces Together, will run in two sessions, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center.
• Health Screening — 10 a.m.* to 2 p.m. and again from 4* p.m. to 6 p.m. Cholesterol, Blood/Sugar, HIV, Blood Pressure and Weight screening will be offered.
(*Note: Health screening during both sessions starts one hour earlier than general fair events.)
• Student Activities — Displays by Student Government Association, various clubs and student organizations. ID Photos: UVI students registered for the Fall semester, who have not taken their I.D. pictures or who have not updated their I.D.'s can do so at the fair. Students must produce their paid their fees payment receipt to qualify.
• Staff — The UVI benefits staff from the Human Resources department will be on hand to speak with UVI employees.
• Voter Registration and Voting Machine Demonstration — The UVI Community and the general public are invited to take advantage of the Sports and Fitness Center's ample parking to accomplish voter registration. Individuals must bring passports, birth certificates or naturalization certificates and Social Security cards.
• Introduction of Miss UVI Contestants — Six students are vying for the title Miss UVI. They include: Jasmine Buttolph, Medina Colbert, Khalilah Gordon, Tamica Lawrence, Davina Martinez and Shakima Stoutt. The contestants will introduce themselves and model UVI clothing from the UVI Bookstore.
• Food and Drink — Food and drink will be offered for sale by various student clubs and organizations. Cultural specialties from such groups as the St. Lucia & Dominica Association and the St. Kitts and Nevis Association will be featured.

UVI St. Croix Alumni Chapter Sets Oct. 1 Meeting to Attract New Members

$50,000 in Scholarships Available for UVI Freshmen
The University of the Virgin Islands has announced that freshman students at the University are eligible for $50,000 in scholarships. Freshmen are encouraged to apply for available scholarships for the 2004-2005 academic year. Woods Hole Researcher to Discuss 'Protected Areas on St. Croix' on Oct. 5
The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) on St. Croix and the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) will sponsor a presentation on protected areas by Dr. Elizabeth Gladfelter at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the University of the Virgin Islands Student Center (Cafetorium) on the St. Croix campus. Dr. Gladfelter, former director of the West Indies Lab and currently affiliated with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, will present "Protected Areas on St. Croix: Personal Odysseys, Community Legacy." World Food Day Activities Set Oct. 17 on St. Croix Campus
World Food Day activities will be held on Sunday, Oct. 17, from noon to 6 p.m. on the UVI's St. Croix campus. There will be a food vendors court, a farmers market, food demonstrations, workshops, music, a petting zoo, children's games and guided tours of research facilities at UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station.
Individuals at all schools and youth groups are invited to take part in the "Kids CAN Make a Difference" Food Drive and the "House of Cans" competition. Donations will go to local food banks and the Grenada relief effort. World Food Day is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, Agricultural Experiment Station and the V.I.
