Feb. 1, 2005 — Senate President Lorraine L. Berry today expressed solidarity with those throughout the Territory and Nation who are preparing to celebrate Black History Month beginning February 1st. Senator Berry indicated that Black History Month is a time when people of all ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds may learn and appreciate the contributions people of African decent have given not only to western society but to world civilization.
"I look forward to this time of the year when we commemorate history, tribulations and triumphs of a strong and proud people," said Senator Berry. "It is important that a people's story be told from their perspective to ensure that their legacy is legitimate and sound," Senator Berry added.
Senator Berry expressed pride in taking time out to attend all Black History Month programs held at the Legislature, and make efforts to participate whenever invited to other community observations. Senator Berry said it was important to learn about African-based and other cultures to better understand different customs and traditions that exist in the Territory.
"We live in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society and it is very important for us to learn about each other's cultural history. By attending, listening and participating in Black History Month programs, we can share in the glorious past of Virgin Islands residents. If we all take time to appreciate the contributions of each racial and cultural group, we might just be able to come to a closer understanding on how we can work together to find common ground," concluded the Senate President.
