UVI Announces Two Summer Sessions for 2005
UVI has announced that it will conduct two summer sessions during the summer of 2005. The first is scheduled for May 16 through June 17. The second session will run from June 22 through July 28. Schedules for both summer sessions will be posted on the UVI Web site on April 4. Open registration for either summer session, via the Internet, will begin on April 4. (Those registering on-line should obtain access PINs from faculty advisors or division chairs.) One-day of in-person registration is scheduled for each of the summer sessions. In-person registration for the first summer session will be on May 9. In-person registration for the second summer session is set for June 15. Due to the addition of a second summer session, advisement and registration for Fall Semester 2005 will be held on April 11 through 15. International Students Required to Present Travel Information
All international students at UVI are advised that they must present their travel information to the UVI Admissions Office for update. Failure to comply will result in a hold being placed on student accounts and delays in travel. For more information, contact the Admissions Office at (340) 693-1150. Instructors are asked to remind students of this requirement. Students who haven't presented travel information will be denied class registration, grades, transcripts and other University services until information is submitted.
New Registrar's Office News Student Newsletter Available On-line
A new edition of the UVI Registrar's Office News is now available on the UVI web site. The newsletter features a calendar of important dates for students. Also included are items and information on international student requirements, the English Proficiency Exam and graduation evaluations. The newsletter is available via various student-related sections of the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
March 22 EPSCoR Lecture to Focus on Birds, People and Ecosystems
"Birds, People and Ecosystems: What's happening and what can we do?" is the topic of the next VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture. The session is scheduled for noon, on Tuesday, March 22 in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus. The guest speaker will be Dr. Jim Corven, an associate professor of biology at UVI. The 2005 EPSCoR Science Lecture Series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. All lectures feature UVI or visiting scientists presenting results from their original research. St. Croix Campus Health Fair Scheduled March 22-24
The Annual Health Fair for 2005 will be held on UVI's St. Croix campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 22 through 24. The fair is designed to promote healthier living among UVI students, faculty and staff, as well as the general Virgin Islands community. Fair activities will include a blood drive, glucose testing, blood pressure checking and vision screening. Information on exercise fitness, introductory massage therapy and HIV education will also be available. Workshops are planned on mental health, general health, herbal medicine, nutrition and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). SBDC-VI Division of Personnel Sets March 22 Seminar on Personnel Supervision
A seminar on the basics of personnel supervision is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, March 22, at the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The session will be presented by Milton Potter, assistant director of the V.I. Division of Personnel. Designed for entrepreneurs, employers, employees and supervisors, the seminar will focus on how proper supervision can develop a good staff and help an organization grow. "The Year of Languages" celebration continues with free foreign films each Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Waste Management and Future of Our Islands Lecture Scheduled March 23
The University of the Virgin Islands' Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service and the Linking Virgin Islands Grass Roots to Environmental Equity Program will sponsor a lecture on "Waste Management and the Future of our Islands" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23. Sonya Nelthropp, executive director of the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority, will be the presenter. The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed for Spring Recess from Friday, March 25, through Sunday, March 27. Classes will resume and administrative offices will return to normal hours on Monday, March 28.
Art of Bonsai Lecture Set Sunday, March 27, on St. Thomas Campus
A lecture on bonsai – the art of growing dwarfed potted plants that are trained in artistic shapes – is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 27 at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Cosponsored by The Plant Depot and UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, the session will be presented by St. Croix horticulturist Rudy O'Reilly. Admission is free. Space is limited. Duke University Professor to Lecture at UVI's Chase Auditorium on March 30
Eric Jarvis, Ph.D., a professor at Duke University and one of few African-Americans to receive the National Science Foundation's highest scientific award for individual achievement, will speak in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas at noon on Wednesday, March 30, with a videoconference link to Evans Center 401 on UVI's St. Croix campus. Dr. Jarvis, a biologist, will lecture on the brain and vocal learning in birds. Research has found a connection between the basal ganglia pathway loop in songbirds and diseases of the basal ganglia in human – specifically Parkinson's, depression and chronic anxiety. Dr. Jarvis has also lectured on evolution and physical constants on other planets. His lecture is part of a series of lectures sponsored by the Minority Access to Research Careers program. Carnival Troupe Fish Fry Set April 1
The UVI community is invited to come out and support the University of the Virgin Islands' entry in the V.I. Carnival 2005 Adult's Parade at a Happy Hour Fish Fry on Friday, April 1, featuring the Ah We band. The party starts at 5:30 p.m. in front of the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus now has in stock Taxcut Deluxe software. Comparable to Turbo Tax, this software was developed by the tax firm H&R Block. It comes with additional software such as Money 2005 and E-filing. It can be purchased for $35.95. Deadline to Apply for UVI Scholarships is April 1
The University of the Virgin Islands Scholarship Committee has announced that Friday, April 1, is the deadline to apply for scholarships to UVI. Interested high school seniors, as well as UVI undergraduate and graduate students, can obtain application forms at UVI Financial Aid and Institutional Advancement offices, as well as the libraries on both campuses. Applications are also available from guidance counselors at high schools throughout the territory. UVI's Spring Production of '1984' Scheduled for April 1-4
George Orwell's classic novel "1984" will come alive this spring on the stage of UVI's Little Theatre on the St. Thomas campus. The Little Theatre's spring play is scheduled for April 1 through 4. Dr. Rosary Harper of the UVI Humanities Department says the cast has been selected, but the play's most imposing character is one you will never see: Big Brother. Tickets go on sale March 14th at Dockside Bookstore, Nisky Pharmacy, UVI Bookstore, and the Humanities Building. General admission is $12. Students with ID are admitted for $6. UVI Student Organizes Stroke Fair Scheduled for April 11 at RLS Hospital
University of the Virgin Islands senior nursing student Reba Williams has organized St. Thomas' first-ever Stroke Fair. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 11, at Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. Participants will learn the signs, symptoms and risks of stroke. Strokes are medical emergencies that require immediate action. Medical specialists will be on hand at the fair to offer cholesterol and blood pressure screening. UVI Strategic Plan 2012 Town Hall Meetings Set April 11-14
Virgin Islands residents are invited to help shape the future of the University of the Virgin Islands at UVI-sponsored town hall meetings on April 11 through 13. The general public is invited to share their views and opinions, which will aid in the development of UVI's Strategic Plan for 2012.
