News Brief: Christensen Honored for Championing National Parks

May 10, 2005 – Delegate Donna M. Christensen was among about 20 current and former members of Congress to recently receive a Park Achievement Award from the National Parks Conservation Association.
"Time and time again, she really stood up for the parks," Craig Obey, the organization's vice-president of government affairs, said Tuesday.
Christensen received the award for her support and leadership of all national parks during the 108th Congress.
She is the ranking member on the House Resources Committee's Subcommittee on National Parks.
Obey said her efforts included pushing for the parks when it came to annual funding needs.
"It was really about enough rangers and can the parks serve the public," Obey said.
He said her signature legislation came in an effort that didn't pass but prevented damaging legislation from getting through. Obey said Christensen introduced a bill to foster communication between parks and their gateway communities.
"She stood up and said if we're going to do this, then this is how we have to do it," he said.
Obey said she was instrumental in preventing an effort to remove land from Great Smokey Mountain National Park.
The award recognizes outstanding efforts by an individual, group or entity whose accomplishments or actions, either locally or nationally, on behalf of the National Park Service, are worthy of public recognition.
Efforts to obtain comment from the delegate's office were unsuccessful.
