Parents: Take the School Satisfaction Survey

May 31, 2005 – St. Thomas and St. John public school officials are creating a revised district improvement plan, and they want to know what parents think about the education their children are receiving.
To facilitate the process, the district has posted a survey on its Web site and has invited parents to log on and answer a few questions. Just like in school, the survey asks parents to grade the success of the school system with letters A, excellent, through F, failure. Questions range from assessing the quality of reading and math instruction, to school safety and the availability of teachers to answer parents' concerns.
"I'm not sure if the results will be made public," said Belinda West-O'Neal, the district's coordinator of student affairs. She added, however, that survey results will be included in the revised improvement plan, which will also be published on the district Web site.
West-O'Neal said surveys have been conducted at the school level in the past, but that this is the first time it's been taken to the district level. "We will use the results to determine which types of programs we should provide to parents, and to improve services to students and the community."
According to a release dated May 30, the deadline for completing the survey is Wednesday, June 1. West-O'neal did not know why the survey was announced so close to the deadline, but indicated that it may be extended. And in fact she called the Source later in the day Tuesday to say the deadline for input had been extended to June 10.
Parents wishing to add their input may complete the survey by going to the district Web site, www.sttj.k12.vi. For more information, contact West-O'Neal at 775-2250, extension 230, or send email to bwoneal@sttj.k12.vi.
