Four Outstanding UVI Alumni to be Honored at June 4 Breakfast
The public is invited to join in a special breakfast as the St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Association pays tribute to some of its outstanding members. The association will honor four members at the third annual Alumni Award Recognition Breakfast scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, at Pilgrim's Terrace. The honorees are Willis Todmann, acting administrator of the Government Employees Retirement System, Michael Watson, proprietor of Petite Pump Room restaurant, Jose Penn, proprietor of Penn's Trucking, and Joan Thomas, co-owner of Pimpy's Water Delivery. Tickets are $25. For ticket information call the UVI Institutional Advancement Office at 693-1044.
UVI 4-H Summer Academy Offered on St. Thomas
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service is offering a 4-H Summer Academy for students ages 5 to 14. The academy will run from June 27 through August 5 at Kirwan Terrace School on St. Thomas. Daily sessions are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. General registration is scheduled from June 1 through 3, at the UVI-CES New House Building on the St. Thomas campus. The fee is $150 per child (and $125 for each additional family member). The children of UVI employees will be charged half-price. For more information, call 693-1078.
Cooperative Extension Service Offers Free Diabetes Workshop on St. Croix
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program will conduct a free diabetes workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, June 7. The workshop will take place in Room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. Participants will learn how to count carbohydrates, read nutrition labels and to determine acceptable amounts of starchy foods that diabetics can consume. Enrichment Institute Offered to High School Juniors and Seniors on St. Croix
Applications are being accepted on UVI's St. Croix campus for a free, 10-day summer enrichment institute named Intellect to STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The institute is for high school juniors and seniors. It will run from June 20 through July 1. Some ninth grade students may be accepted, based on space availability. A limited number of spots are available for this fun-filled and intellectually stimulating activity. Applications are available at the UVI Science and Mathematics Division office or by fax by calling 692-4150. The application deadline is Friday, June 10, 2005. UVI Offers Medical College Admissions Test Workshop to Virgin Islanders
An MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) Preparation Workshop through the Princeton Review will be offered at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas campus, in half-day sessions from August 7 – 17, 2005. This workshop is open to Virgin Islanders preparing for the Medical College Admissions Test. Sessions will concentrate on the language sections of the test. It is appropriate for college sophomores and juniors. There is a fee of $50 for the course. The course normally costs over $600. If interested, please call Judy Roland-Fahie at 340-693-1232 by June 1, 2005. Space is limited. The course will not run unless there are enough registered participants.
UVI Seeks Team Members for 2005 'Relay for Life' Cancer Event
UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster has issued a request for individuals who would like to join in an ad hoc team that will plan UVI's participation in the 2005 "Relay for Life," the annual event that serves as the National Signature Celebration for the American Cancer Society. This year's St. Thomas "Relay for Life" is scheduled for June 25-26. Interested members of the UVI community should contact Dr. Ragster's office by phone at 693-1000, fax at 693-1005, or e-mail at lragste@uvi.edu.
