Man Gets Probation for Sexual Exploitation of Minor

June 9, 2005 – Malcolm Hughes, a former corrections officer at the Golden Grove Correctional Facility on St. Croix, was sentenced Wednesday to five years probation and a $5,000 fine on one count of sexual exploitation of a minor, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
A jury found Hughes, a 30-year-old resident of the LBJ housing community, guilty in Nov. 2003 after a two-day trial before District Judge Raymond Finch on St. Croix.
The jury found that Hughes had, on two separate occasions, taken sexually explicit photos of a minor during the summer of 2003. Photographs were developed at a processing store at the Golden Rock Shopping Center, and copies were given to the victim after Hughes had taken some for himself.
These pictures were found during a police investigation for a missing person at the victim’s home.
U.S. Sentencing Guidelines recommended a sentence of 15 to 24 months in prison for such a violation.
