July 13, 2005 – V.I. Attorney General Alva A. Swan is dead. Swan died early Wednesday morning at the Schneider Regional Medical Center. The cause of death is not known and it is also not known whether, Swan, brother of Superior Court Judge Ive A. Swan, had been ill.
James O'Bryan Jr., Government House spokesman, issued a statement to Radio One, saying, "It is with great sadness that Gov. Charles W. Turnbull announces the passing of Attorney General Alva Swan. The governor was informed of his death earlier Wednesday morning by family members," O'Bryan said. "The governor described the attorney general as a dedicated career public servant who will be greatly missed."
Turnbull had nominated Swan for the top Justice Department post in February to replace then-Attorney General Iver Stridiron, who had left the post. Swan was confirmed as V.I. attorney general in May.
Swan had served as chief deputy attorney general for the previous 11 years. Swan joined the V.I. Justice Department in 1993 after leaving private practice as a trial lawyer in D.C. where he also worked as managing attorney at Neighborhood Legal Services, an organization that provides services to low-income residents of the Capitol region.
"The governor on behalf of the people and government of the V.I. extend to Swan's wife Arlene and his brother Superior Court Judge Ive Swan. Profound condolences on his passing. May his soul rest in peace," O'Bryan said.
