Dec. 9, 2005—A shortage of fire trucks on St. Thomas is holding up operations at the Dorothea fire station.
According to Donald Charles, spokesman for the Virgin Islands Fire Services, the current truck used at the Dorothea station has been experiencing mechanical problems, and until Tuesday — by which time the truck is supposed to be fixed — the station will be closed.
Charles added that the station has been shut down for the past six days because Fire Services has been unable to replace the truck there with another one. Usually, when the truck at Dorothea is not working, another is brought over from St. John to be used, but at this time, the territory’s fire trucks are tapped out, Charles said.
Charles said the Public Finance Authority is committed to financing a new fleet of trucks for St. Thomas.
"One has been ordered — a new water tanker — but we have been told that it will not get here until February," he said.
