Jan. 29, 2006 — The Leeward Islands batmen returned to the Cancryn pitch Sunday afternoon needing 410 runs to best Barbados in the third day of their Carib Beer Series match.
The Leewards face a tough Monday, down nine wickets and needing another 238 runs to beat the Bajans.
Ryan Hinds led Barbados batting with 168 in the first innings and 150 in the second. His fielding was outstanding as well.
Overall, Barbados added 307 to their 360 first-inning total before Carl Simon bowled out Fidel Edwards and the Leewards resumed batting.
The Leeward's first wicket fell as Austin Richards tried to pull away from Edwards' bowl, but the ball found the bat's splice, lobbing a high ball into the waiting hands of Hinds.
Hinds, who seemed to be everywhere, also caught Shane Jeffers at 82.
Edwards made a magnificent catch — falling to his knees and tumbling forward and drawing the ball into his chest — taking the Leeward's third wicket and retiring Sylvester Joseph.
The fourth and fifth wickets fell at 118 and 119 as Runako Morton and Wilden Cornwall were bowled out.
A late six from Banks blew over the press box, bounced in the container yard behind the cricket grounds and plummeted into the sea.
Banks was then bowled by Hinds at 139.
Yet another wicket fell as Alcindo Holder caught a high, short blast from Simon.
Hinds had Alderman Lesmond, 5, caught for the eighth wicket and then had Adam Sanford, 6, stumped for the ninth.
Hinds has taken three for 63 and Ryan Nurse, five for 59.
Things looked grim for the Leewards as the shadows grew long on Cancryn Grounds in St. Thomas.
Although the match can not go longer than seven hours, according to tournament rules, play started at 9:30 a.m. and did not end until 6:06 p.m.
